the naming of Sprout

Look at me go, with the daily posts! It's like I'm turning over a new leaf!!! I also am doing Pilates twice a week and I actually went to Costco today to buy 2 dozen various ready-to-eat tuna lunches so that I can stop eating crap from the restaurant and try to eat somewhat healthy lunches everyday.... I guess I'm trying to get in top shape before I become the mother of 2 children... holy crap! 2!!!!

Anyhow, if the early rumors are to be believed, we are in the clear against an October referral and can hope for a November referral with January travel, which would make life much, much easier for all involved. But now that everyone that was ahead of me in the waiting line in my Blogistan Posse got their referral, I need to get organized for Sprout's arrival. I have ordered the fabric for curtains and bedding and we bought the paint yesterday. Once Sukkot is over, I will paint the room.

What is likely not going to be so easy is the naming of Sprout. It was so hard just to come up with an Internet name, the real-life one is going to be even tougher!  You see, in Dumpling's case, it was very easy. Her real name was going to be my husband's grand-mother's name, no matter what. For a while, we were going to do XXX-Jade, but then, I got on-line and saw how many Chinese-adoptees were named Jade and I poo-pooed the idea. Once we read-up on identity and the importance of keeping the Chinese name (in our opinion), we decided to do XXX-"part of the Chinese name". Dumpling has a very cute name, we mostly call her just XXX but often call her XXX-"Chinese name" and as she grows older, we really try to use the hyphenated name more. At nursery school, they always use her hyphenated name.

So we have decided to do the same with Sprout and give her a hyphenated name. We have also decided to wait for the Chinese name before we give her an English name, to make sure we do something that works. The other thing is that given our cultural backgrounds, we need a name that works in English, French and Hebrew without major changes in pronunciation.  So I have started a very long short-list..... some names Hubs and I agree on, some he thinks I'm nuts. I, for one, thought of Emanuelle, but he tells me it reminds him too much of a certain porn series from his youth... Also, it's too long to hyphenate, but I guess the porn thing is worse!

Among the names we like are names that have already been given to other children we know. Obviously, relative's names are out of the question. But there are 2 names that we REALLY like. So today, I contacted one of the friends (a very close Internet buddy) and she was kind enough to let me keep it on the list until we see the Chinese name. The other, hubs will have to contact the people directly, as these are real-life friends.

Of course, blogging about this is pointless, as Sprout will never be known as anything but Sprout on-line, but hey, I'm trying to do the daily blogging thing and that's what's on my mind today!

hey a good friend who gave her *dog* the same name i gave my son, and i was not insulted! nor was i bothered when my husband's cousin gave her son my son's name as a first name, and my husband's name as a middle one. sure, things will be a teeny bit confusing at christmas, but they loved the name and it would be silly not to use it.

I am glad that you are taking so much time and putting so much thought in naming the baby. I am a social worker and some of the names that I have heard are beyond horrible.
For instance:
Green
Chief
SirCharles
Neverwillbesecond (no joke)
Baby Girl (serious)
Prada-Coach (really)

By the way, I impressed my professor by knowing what Sukkot was, pretty good for Catholic girl in a Catholic University:-)

Of course you will take this discussion over to the small list, right? Because inquiring minds want to know!

Um, yeah, what Mrs. Figby said. We love the name talk over there.

Early rumors? What early rumors? When is your LID again?

I think Emmanuelle is pretty, but yeah probably to long to hyphenate.

I love the idea of a hypenated name! We were thinking of 3 names but the hpenated thing - that just might work. If you don't mind I just might do something like that too!!

The social security website has a very fun popular name list to play with. I changed my name years ago because every 5th person seemed to share it with me. When I looked at that name over a 100 year time span I saw that it had one year in which it reached its greatest popularity which was number 9 of all the ssn's listed that year. Yup, that year was the year of my birth. Anyway, it helps with the plague name when you think that you have hit on the perfect name and in first grade there are 4 kids with the same one.
