alternatives

alternatives
Swe were going to do dinner and a movie, but true to form, Mortimersdad got a case of *traveler's sickness*, which basically amounts to a combo of dehydration, exhaustion and headache. He is sleeping it off and I'm waiting for my alternative diiner: take out pizza aned wine from the bar while I wait. I did score an alternative to the imaginary perfecgt bag at a different Macy's juswt before they closed It's not perfect, but just like my takeFolut, it will do.

Not supporting the Chicago economy

Though not for lack of trying!

the mythical, hypothetical, perfect bag that I imagined in my head, it doesn't exist. I know. Because I dragged Mortimer's Dad into every department store and handbag store on the Magnificant Mile. Every one of them. I cam close at Coach. One was perfect (simple, cut ecolors, nice strap) but too small for what I want to put in it. And the other was perfect size wize, if a little flashy, but with a price of almost 800$, I just couldn't do it. I am not a 800$ handbag person. At least not yet.

So while Mortimer's Dad scored a stylish zippered sweater at Bloomingdales, some cool dog gifts including goggles for dogs (I am so not kidding) and cute gifts for the girls, my haul is a disposable razor and People magazine.....

tomorrow, we tour fancy houses build by famous architects. No bag will be found, but who knows, I jut may feel the need to put a downpayment on a Chicago Pied-a-Terre....

Somehow, it came together

I took the J Crew dress to the mall and attempted to find either a) shoes that matched one of the jackets I already owned or b) a jacket/cardi that matched the shoes I already owned. In the end I found a pair of off-white patent leather peep-toed shoes, very very cheap at Aldo, and a somewhat matching clutch. I was going to wear it with a cream/beige jacket, but at the last second, I dug up a little cardigan from J Crew that has a French country-side scene printed on it..... it turned out to be perfect!

And thankfully, the fundraiser was a small cocktail followed by a comedy show, so the chit-chat part was minimal. Yeah!

(oh, and look, white trim! )

Fashion Stress

Being stylish is causing me hives!

I am attending a library fundraiser tonight. I tend to avoid those events, because while I enjoy the cocktails and the yummy snacks, I would rather poke my eyes out with blunt scissors than make chit-chat with socialites and wanna-be-socialites. I have a prefect dress that I got from J Crew on pre-order when the spring catalogue came out in Janaury (and has been in my closet for weeks, waiting to get out and breathe! but for somereason, there is no picture of it online) But it it a tad too revealing in the bust, so I need to cover up with a jacket or cardi. Which I have a ton of. But not a single one that goes nicely with the deep pomnegranate shade of the dress.... So as soon as I leave work, I have to go on a one hour hunt for a cover-up. And probably some sort of cute shoes, because the shoes I have that go with the dress will likely not go with the cover-up.... This is why I usually stay home!

And then, there is the Paris-induced stress. I'm going with the style-maven Mrs Figby, so I must be at my best at all times, even when wearing my casual yellow city-fit pants and tunic. But shoes and a bag..... arrgghhhh! Shoes have to be super comfy for all the walking we are going to do, but still stylish enough to go with wathever I end up wearing. I'm thinking ballet flats and one pair of leather Camper sandals that I bought on my honeymoon but are oh so cute and comfy...

The biggest problem is the bag. I need to lug around my big camera. Because it's Paris, and nice picture opportunities will be around every corner. But the bag I usually use when I carry my camera looks like this:

Moped It's very practical and comfy and cute in a weekend sort of way, but it is not Paris-stylish. I do own several nice purses, but none of them have either a strap or can go across my shoulder. This is a *must* for me and my back if I'm going to walk around a lot and carry my guide book, camera and you know.... wallet! (possibly water, a sweater, etc)

Finding a bag is driving me nuts. No matter what, it will not be a fancy bag. Because I am not a fancy-bag kind of person, plus, I'm going there to shop, so I want to be reasonable before I go. But it is imperative that it be stylish and comfortable.....

first step: open the door and walk

I did it. I dropped off Dumpling at school (all dressed up in white and navy for Israel's 60th, complete with white sating bows in her hair!), came home, put on my new running shoes and did the first session.

10 min of walking, 8 repetitions of 30 sec running/1 min walking and then 5 more minutes of walking.

It was fine. Not too hard, not too easy. I made myself run a bit harder than I had to, I didn't want to coast through it. My iPod is a big heavy (it's the video one) and if I'm going to keep bringing my cellphone, I'm gonna need some sort of tight belt/pocket thing because it was moving around too much in my pocket. And speaking of moving around, today, I must buy a jogging bra!

Wearing the yellow tunic

Wearing the yellow tunic
Last week, bobbi jo asked me if I would wear the yellow "dress" with pants. As you can see, it's much more a tunic than a dress, so I'm wearing it over white cropped pants (the horror!). Perfect summery outfit for a knitting group meeting, or maybe for a stroll down the Champs Elysees, non?

PS: I added a link, in case the subtlety was lost in translation

many new beginnings

First, I promised some photos....

Here is what used to be the mezzanine at the country house:

Img_0675_1 and here is the room my brother built for BB: Img_3990_1

Img_3995_2 Because it's a really tiny space, my super-clever brother followed some of my ideas and put some shutters that overlook the living room (and are exactly centered with the high A-frame living room window) AND he put another window across from it, to let some light into the staircase (and make the room feel less cramped). For now, she's still in a toddler bed there, so the room actually feels big. Eventually, we'll have to get her a single bed, but we'll get it with drawers underneath so she'll have room to put her stuff. For now, it's primed dark beige, left from the rest of the house. But as we speak, Super Uncle T is painting it..... something called Frothy Yellow! (she picked it herself from some pre-selected colors I showed her).

I really want to show you pictures of the white paint job, new fireplace and wallpaper at the house, but it just feels so wrong until the wallpaper is fixed. So instead, I will entertain you with a different before and After. Yesterday, my brother spent the day in  my warehouse, building shelving up to 10 feet high to help us organize out-of-season stock. While he was there, I had him take a counter in my office space and lower it to desk height. This is what I was left with:

Img_3999_3 Pretty drab, right? It was even worse before he fixed the desk. Because it used to be so high, we also had an old white particle-board desk shoved on the left wall (where the shelving is in the pic) and the back wall was covered in standard store wall slats, which were full of paperwork. It was the most uninspiring place to work. It was always messy because the counter was so useless, and frankly, I hated spending time in there. (How can you re-order Pee & Poo in such a drab office? They are in stock BTW!!!!)

So today, I did a mini make-over. With 150$ dollars and 3.5 hours, I did this:

Img_4001_4 3 rolls of wallpaper (ironically also Graham & Brown, this one found at H*me D*pot) and a gallon of fuchsia paint. Once it's dry, I'll need to put up some shelving and a bulletin boards and other office things, but this time, everything will be pretty! I'm done with working in someone else's leftovers! BTW, Scary Russian Dudes take note: my paper is hung straight AND level. (and to answer Melissa, the reason I'm not doing the living room paper on my own is because of the amount of delicate cuts that need to be made around sconces, fireplace etc. Ironically, they did a good job on that, they just couldn't align the pattern!)

today, I also bought these: Runshoe

I have decided I'm going to start running. I am horribly out of shape. I used to have yoga/pilates sessions when I worked at the other store (it was in the same building) but I stopped when we went to China to get BB and since then, I have done nothing but couch-surf. My local paper is having a series on learning to run, which details a week by week plan. they are on week 4, but it took me this long to gt my head around the idea. Today, I bought the shoes. Tonight, I download the plan, tomorrow, I start.

Finally, I signed up for another photo class. It's not camera-specific this time, since I now feel comfortable finding all the settings on  my camera. I just don't know what to do with them! I know I need to play with the f-stop, but I can never remember if I want to go higher or lower. So I'm taking another basics class. Lots and lots of new little beginnings.

PS: before you comment, *I KNOW* I need another coat or two of paint! I just slapped some on for the picture!

Wallpaper Rescue (UK Branch)

If only I used my powers and determination for something more worthy than wallpaper, I could solve some serious problems in the world. But instead, I channeled all my energy into solving my wallpaper crisis.

Thursday broke down something like this:

  • Google the crap out of Graham & Brown Axium Wallpaper
  • Order it from Target and ship it to D.'s house
  • Find out from Graham & Brown that they fill Target orders, therefore, cannot get it from Target either
  • Re-Google the crap out of it and find a UK source that claims to have 1000 rolls in stock.
  • Notice they don't ship outside the UK
  • Remember that I have a bloggy-friend Jo who lives in the UK
  • Totally overstep the boundaries of internet friendship and email Jo informing her I need her address to ship wallpaper to her house and have her re-send it to me.
  • 5 min later, get an auto-response that Jo is out of the office for a week, PANIC!
  • Since there is NO WAY I'm waiting a week to solve this situation, email Alisa, who is actually friends with Jo, and beg her to forward my message to whatever other address she's got for Jo (they spend the day on IM, I knew Alisa would know how to reach her!)
  • Attempt to email the wallpaper company but have trouble, so instead, I call them directly in the UK
  • Speak to a lovely lady who can't understand a word I'm saying, so she passes me to Tom, who sounds just like Jim from Coronation Street (remember Jim? I  miss Jim!)
  • Jim thinks I'm a little over-excited over this particular wallpaper but he does some checking and it turns out they do in fact claim to have access to 1000 rolls (basically, he called the Graham & Brown warehouse and has to get it transferred to him)
  • Jim is confused when I explain to him that since he won't ship to Canada (something to do with VAT) I will send it to my friend Jo, but I need to get back to him with her address because I don't have it, since I've never actually met her.
  • He tells me to call him back when I know where I am shipping it to
  • Hear from Jo 10 min later, surprisingly, she agrees to my crazy scheme (And titles her email Wall Paper Rescue, UK branch, which I stole for this post!)
  • Call Tom back. In the meantime, he spoke to someone else. he's not 100% convinced he can get the wallpaper, but if he can, he feels very bad for the whole situation and agrees to ship it to me directly so I don't have to pay to ship it to Jo and then for Jo to ship it to me.

That, my friends, is what I did on Thursday. I was at work but I got little accomplished, because I was 100% focused on solving the Great Wall Paper Crisis of 2008. Oh, I also spent several hours trying to cancel my Target order. The stupid website wouldn't let me cancel it, I called them and I they couldn't cancel it either. Meanwhile, the lovely, lovely customer service person at Graham & Brown USA promised me that no matter what, the order wouldn't ship (since she didn't have enough). Really, she and Tom were life saviours!

In non-wallpaper related news, it was a rainy weekend and we were stuck inside, driving each other crazy. We ended up driving to the country house on Sunday to see BB's new bedroom, which used to be the mezanine. She loved it! Tomorrow, PICTURES!

I'm crying over wallpaper

yes, I realize that there are way worst things in life than screwed up wall paper. Trust me, I know. I've been telling myself over and over again that I should just forget about it and just remember that last year at this time, Hubs was in the hospital....

but you know what? For one day, I want to cry! The wallpaper situation is dire. The company doesn't have enough to resend me the entire quantity. Well, maybe they have enough rolls in total, 9, but not all from the same batch. And also, 9 rolls total doesn't leave me the one I want to keep in the closet just in case. But I could live with that, except I'm worried about the non-same batch.

So when I got their email while driving to work this morning, I burst into tears. Seriously. Because I waited 6 months to have this stupid PERFECT wallpaper put up. And now if I have to pick something else, NOTHING will be perfect. And every time I go into that room or walk by it, I'm going to be reminded of what it SHOULD have looked like and how much I hate the stupid 3 scary Russian Dudes and the moronic Olga the project-non-manager.

I got excited for a few minutes when I remember that Target carried the wall paper. I IM'd my friend D online, and though she has her own crap to deal with, begged her to take delivery of my wallpaper and reship it to me (as Target doesn't ship to Canada). She agreed and I ordered. Only to find out a few minutes later that Target only passes the order onto the same warehouse that I am already in touch with, therefore, I still can't get the wallpaper.

There is a small, very very small possibility that I  can get it from the head office in England, but she is not hopeful. In the mean time I can't decide: take the few rolls they have from the different batches and hope that it's enough AND that there isn't a significant color difference between them OR just mourn the loss of the perfect wall paper and move on.
